I first fell in love with stained glass while living in Berkeley in the late 70s. While I was there I saw a poster about a studio offering classes in stained glass, and I signed up. I spent many of my days in the studio, learning how to cut and grind glass, how colors complement or clash, and how to be patient, for glass can’t be forced or hurried. Sometimes I would look up, and see the sun shining outside, but there I sat inside, entranced by glass, light and color. I was hooked, and have never lost that love or sense of wonder.
After I returned to NH, I continued to learn about glass through classes and a lot of my own trial and error, eventually building a portfolio of small pieces, commissioned works, and taking on repairs. Along the way I taught myself about sandblasting, first on just the surface and then sandcarving, which gives a three dimensional look to pieces. I learned to paint on glass in the early 80s from the incomparable glass painter Albinas Elskus, and fusing techniques thanks to Bullseye Glass workshops.
Every glass panel or fused glass piece I create is hand made using art glass, frit and paints, all specific to glass art. I work in my studio in NH where I have lived since the early 70s. For many years I worked in social services and stained glass was something I did at night and on weekends, out of my love of the medium. Now I am able to devote my time fully to working in the studio, when I'm not in the garden or spending time with my family.
There is still so much to learn, but it is in the process of it all that I find the most enjoyment, as it is both frustrating when things go awry, and rewarding when my vision is matched by the finished work. Glass is a magical medium; it changes how it looks from day to night, from sunny day to cloudy day, southern light to northern light, even east to west light. No other medium is quite like it.
I am happy to offer stained glass panels, commissions, functional fused glass items, and repairs. Please feel free to reach out to me with any inquiries regarding work seen here or with requests for commissioned pieces or repairs.
